It is not sexism to be afraid of strangers in the woods

In the case where you took everything out though, there's no bags for it to get stuck on. There's no need for it to slam itself

Windows just sucks at handling Bluetooth. It's ridiculous that you can't change audio codecs, or choose between handsfree and high quality audio. You have to let windows guess at both

ReveredOxygen ,
@ReveredOxygen@sh.itjust.works avatar

You can change flatpak permissions with flatseal (you'll need to install it). A lot of them have absolutely braindead defaults
It's really not great to get in the habit of installing random debs from the Internet. Aside from being a massive security issue, you'll never get updates. If mint repos don't get updated though, I suppose that's the easiest workaround

ReveredOxygen ,
@ReveredOxygen@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah when you're downloading from sites like those, there's not a security risk anymore. The thing is that Linux software generally expects you to be using a package manager, so it doesn't update itself. When you download and install debs, you lose auto update functionality. But when you're on a distro like mint with old packages, that doesn't really matter since you're not getting up to date software through the repos anyway

Bezos distributes them to employees, but I'm not aware of him using them himself

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

I got it to type fuck just now when I started swiping from g instead of f, so it wouldn't put a d. if yours is typing guck though, that probably won't work

That's the point. The new copilot key emulates shift+win+f23 because they expect that nobody is using f23

Would you teach your kids how to pirate?

My gf and I have had discussions about teaching morals to kids. In that vein, I asked myself, would I teach piracy to my kids? Yes, it’s technically illegal and carries inherent risks. But so does teenage sex carry the risks of teenage pregnancy, and so we have an obligation to children to teach them how to practice safe sex....

Louisiana purchase was approx $18/mi². 1 mi² = 640 acre, so 900 acres was $25. No inflation calculator goes back that far, but I don't think $25 then was worth $500,000 now

Edit: no idea how reliable https://www.officialdata.org/us/inflation/1803?amount=25 is, but it claims $25 then is $681 now

We have normal cheese here too. American cheese is a specific kind of cheese, the same way Swiss cheese is. If you ask me, American cheese is nasty, but we do have good cheese in America

If that's the case, you shouldn't have one on your domain. If someone wants to know your subdomains, they can still brute force them

Rotating banners on /r/piracy ( lemmy.dbzer0.com )

Hey mates, recently I've developed a tool to use the GenerativeAI on the AI Horde to created random avatars and banners on lemmy. To keep things spicy, I wanted to deploy to rotate the /c/piracy banner daily, as I've done in a bunch of other communities like !stable_diffusion_art and the lemmy.dbzer0.com....

ReveredOxygen ,

Not really? It doesn't have sources, all the information is just thrown into a heap in its neural net. You can somewhat trick it by telling it that it's an expert in the field, but it's far from foolproof

The machine can also just count what it sells. It doesn't need to do facial recognition to see who's buying it

Replacing users who leave isn't growth though, it's sustenance. With the current user count there are posts much more frequently than one every 3 weeks, and I don't see how that would change from lack of growth (not shrinking)

Even for a 4096 bit hash (which isn't used afaik, usually only 1024 bit is used (but this could be outdated)), you only need to change 4096 bits on average. Even for a still 1080p image, that's 1920x1080 pixels. If you change the least significant bit of each color channel, you get 6,220,800 bits you can change within anyone noticing. That means on average there are 1,518 identical-looking variations of any image with a given 4096 bit hash, on average.
This goes down a lot when you factor in compression: those least significant bits aren't going to stay the same. But using a video brings it up by orders of magnitude: rather than one image, you can tweak colors in every frame
The difficulty doesn't come from the existence, it comes because you need to check 2⁵¹² = 10¹⁵⁴ different images to guarantee you'll find a match. Hash functions are designed to take a while to compute, so you'd have to run a supercomputer for an extremely long time to brute force a hash collision

ReveredOxygen ,
@ReveredOxygen@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah I was using a high length at first because even if you overestimate, that's still a lot. I did 512 for the second because I don't know a ton about cryptography but that's the largest SHA output
