I'm not greedy but I want a dataset of how it correlates with gender and sexuality of responders. The working hypothesis is very promising. I want it raw 𓁹‿𓁹

Steamcharts doesn't show a nosedive I've expected, but we'd see: https://steamcharts.com/app/553850

The product is still working. In this case it's probably worth waiting for the stats after they implement this feature.

@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

They should've acted like the Cold War never ended because the other side uses the same old playbook, ruled by the people coming from the executive branch: spies, cops, state security, who just can't think differently, and even in early two thousands acted like that, but not with the confidence they've got since that. Europe can't just throw Ukraine under the carpet like they are talking with a rational entity to save relations or whatever. If they wouldn't learn from that, wouldn't act on that, that'd define the survival of these alliances, because no one would ever feel secure in them.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Maybe a little excessive for just drone operation and communications, but the formfactor of a handheld console is where the sweet spot is. I feel like if they'd make them for $100 with something akin to a 10-years old hardware in a rugged everything-proof body, it can become a standard in the future. Cheap drones have shown they can drop bombs alright, so there's probably a market for a cheap controller made just for that.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Their R&D in designing a console and these nice controllers is probably more expensive for Valve than what they've got from selling actual products, but cheap smartphone is $40 in the more sanctioned Russia, so I guess something like $100 isn't an unreasonable price goal, and these folks are historically more into IT than we are, that makes me believe they can do or already did cheap controlling devices. I'm open to be wrong.

And yeah, military things are always extra durable and extra overpriced, but they are in a process to cut corruption to join NATO\EU, so probably the end price won't be that exhausting.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Instances can enable or disable the email verification and other measures, like asking why you want to join that instance.

I don't recall reddit being so liberal. I haven't used an account I didn't verified in the same day, so I can't say if it works, but I suspect they can enable different protocols for inspecting unverified accs.

As a side-note to that discussion: my VPN works with most services i can't access otherwise while reddit blocked me as I tried to access it to see for myself. I'm surprised.

@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

I'm still having troubles to understand why'd they even want Windows 11 to happen and I'd really like some more informed people to help me out.

They had massive mergers as an unpredicted expense. I also don't know many people who bought the last XBOX unlike previous gens or ever used MS Store. Is that sweet lobbying money from hardware producers? I thought they planned Windows X as the peak Windows platform to then sell internal products (game-as-a-service but OS), so did this plan failed?

Windows 11 looks like an afterthought and the centered taskbar may be intentionally put there to make it look different from Win10 while it's probably the least changed new release as I learnt after a brief encounter with it (after XP, I don't know much about earlier OSes).

Had they just run out of money?

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

I'd probably say a blasphemy, but ordinary workers only experience problems for their old HDDs\systems are overstuffed and are far from their prime, so they ask for entire new PC to start fresh. New Seven x64 on SSD is what most people would'be okay with*, since it's compatible with new Office document formats, doesn't need much resources or space, and can still do everything except for niche tasks. It's not as morbid as Vista\8, not yet filled with bloat like 10 or 11, not as limited today as XPx32 with older driver delivery model. I don't know much about security stuff, but I feel like older systems falling from popularity are not the usual targets of people who write them, and encountering one using an outdated OS would probably mean nothing since exploits they want to abuse aren't there yet.

* Linux would probably be better, but that's still a hard sell for businesses that don't use it intentionally.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Probably, if they aren't that obscure. I don't know if a distance is that long between Windows 11 and Seven, but I suppose it's that big for older systems.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

We can call them just BONK for they aren't as good at building planes anymore as they are at hunting whistleblowers. This case's probably not on them since it's too unpredictable, but the last one was very suspicious.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

So they come to mirror the attacks NATO said their big NO to? Iran doesn't veto the use of their shaheed drones in these cases. Talk about assymetrical warfare

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Please, don't even touch this. With our RKN and useless pinnocchios banning random things extrajudiciously, I'd be surprised if we'd have any access to the internet in 2026. For those without a government issued pass and active service in bot farms, I mean. If I'd get limited to local resources, I feel like I'd give up on internet altogether. Can't discuss shit there without pseudo-trad weirdos chiming in.

It may be a major plus for the Internet as a whole if the cable is cut completely, but I feel like it'd only be cut for dissenting folks, while carriers of the official talking points wouldn't ever get limited.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Can't get it rn, but it's the kind of a post that usually leads to an underlooked treasure. Gotta save it to a wishlist.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

It has a seemingly active community on Lemmy of all places, their posts frequently show up in my feed. What triple A game has this? Although I'm not interested in it too and they banned my country for a reason, I'm guilty in looking how to buy it.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

BG3? But it's an exclusion in many, many ways.

andrew_bidlaw OP ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

What if I told you that at some point in the game you are to kill a giant flying insect with a fork? Or to find a mass grave or those who thought they are worthy to follow the footsteps you're yet to make? Or that you can kill two of three dunmeric self-entitled gods while you are at it? These are all in the vanilla GOTY game. It's just that insane and profoundly hand-crafted by the trinity of the experienced in their field old guard, the new guys with a shine in their eyes and Michael Kirkbride who ate through another mile of acid-laced postmarks. If you are to leave the first tutorial village here, you'd never come back (:

andrew_bidlaw OP ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

the end goal is basically overthrowing the government and installing a Dunmer ethno state... And the Emperor is fine with it lol.

Red Year is coming in 3... 2... 1...

I'd disagree with you saying you are building the ethnostate since your end goal is to kill the one who tried to do that, and also to use Akhulakhan (big godly mecha) to undo the Empire, like it's some Metal Gear Solid game lol. You kill the most dissenting party here, and whatever your choices were before, you still build this province as a more tolerant place than Dagoth Ur envisioned. Even Redoran's ultraconservative pov is vanilla compared to what could've happened if he won. So it's a win for Empire even if they didn't know that wouldn't last.

andrew_bidlaw OP ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

If you'd ever get lost there or in the other TES games, UESP is an old-styled wiki resource not killed by Fandom and still going strong for decades: https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Main_Page

I'd suggest you to use OpenMW as an engine since it has, if I'm correct, many patches to games' issues already under the hood. To use it, just install Morrowind+DLCs and then show OpenMW where it all landed. I believe, original english ISO files can be found even on the Internet Archive, but if they aren't, I can send you a magnet link to a torrent. Lets incentivise Bethesda to make the TES6 already.

AlMSIVI are losing their powers at this point, so unlike Daggerfall with it's 6 endings, whatever you do, the star that Molag Bal launched and Vivek slowed down would eventually crush into the capital even if you leave Vivek alive. The one thing they could do is releasing slaves and establishing good relations with argonians, who are happy to pillage the province in the distress, but they didn't. So they ate the cake they baked.

I'm pissed that most of that was designed when they did the OG game, but we come to know that through books in Oblivion and poorly-written published fanfics.

andrew_bidlaw OP ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Kirkbride is a sick, demented man.

A beloved one at that. It's a shame we don't see games inspired by him anymore. Someone like Supergiant could've pulled it off.

andrew_bidlaw OP ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

What's your favorite place in here then? I'm pretty basic so I'd pick Molag Mar for how one canton of Vivek looks weird placed in the wilderness, and I'm curious what would be your loved one.

andrew_bidlaw OP ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

You are cool. I felt something similar to these places.

andrew_bidlaw OP ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Be aware that it's wery old and don't be shy from googling UESP wiki or reaching some player's PMs if you'd feel lost.

andrew_bidlaw OP ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

I'm happy you did. Of all parts, it's harder to get into Oblivion now than anything else, surprisingly. I faied at that, but you may win and write another post here. I feel sad about it for Sheoghoraths' isles were one the best moments in the whole franchise.

Closer relations between the Vietnam and Vatican have raised eyebrows over why the Communist Party is making friends with a state where political organizations are tightly under the thumb of the religious authorities.

In some cases it can be geoblocked or would be deleted with time if IP holders demand so. But that's probably the case for most platforms. The pro-point for youtube is that it is embeddable in most social networks and website engines, so if you post it to your blog or chat it'd play within the page or app without coming to another resource.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Clever. Didn't thought about that.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

accepting the argument that I shouldn’t get a better visual/overall game experience because of a mod I’ll never play

I'd be surprised if they'd do something substantial. They only do that to keep paid DLCs and mods afloat.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Fallout 4 looks alright if you aren't a widescreen user. It's not that old. Why would they even do that?

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

It was expensive before because it's a supreme form of communication: don't need both parties to be online and vacant, conveys complex info in a succint form (think numbers, adresses) that's saved on both parties' phones like notes for later, have an option to pay for another party to answer you, could be printed and sent in secret when there's a meeting or a lesson (with physical buttons most could've printed a message under the table) and it kinda had it's own culture, with basic emoticons and shorthands for words - even if being far from how popular it became in Japan and in pager's times.

Right now SMS messages aren't used that much by individuals since it was killed by the internet+messengers+touchscreens trio so they charge extra to milk those who happen to need that. A lot of carriers at my place provide subscription plans with minutes and gigabytes, with SMS as additional paid package or with a ridiculous price for every message.

But they don't actually earn much here, even if they charge a whopping lot. SMS providers get fed by commercial contracts with services who notify you of delivery, send you verification codes and show you your CC balance. Signal, the messenger, started to look into phone number-less accounts because their non-profit is tired to shoulder the price they need to pay for just an SMS per login. Some services now call instead of texting you and make you write the last numbers of the phone to verify your identity, because it's cheaper for now.

I feel kinda nostalgic of times when it was popular and carriers introduced special plans for messaging enthusiasts. I hate people calling for every small thing and I'm tired of checking multiple internet channels of information. With SMS it all was simple and direct.

Watching Shane Black's The Predator that released a year afterward did not help revive a lot of interest in that movie universe for me either. I've heard a lot of takes but I'm curious, would anyone here recommend watching Covenant?

Wouldn't recomend Covenant, although it's better than Prometheus, but I would recomend Prey (2022), the one of the last Predator movies that's completely bonkers in many directions. It's filmed in american natives' language, placed in 1791, and have a lot of immersing scenes with fights with wild animals as well as gags horror enjoyers would love - like throwing a beartrap right into the face. I don't know your taste, but I hold this lesser budget and alternative thing as a new breath into the franchise.

@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Ascaron's Sacred games were a cool junk tho, with all the armpit smell of early 00s, including big dragons, sexy ladies, graves for teletubbies, local metal as OST and quests that can still kill your entire walkthrough decades after. It wasn't up to Blizz standards in art and gameplay, but it was fun. I discovered it years after an inital release and still left hundreds of hours exploring the map and doing semi-ironical quests. There's so much creativity and unrealized potential.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

For me they were equally bugged, but the second game kind of lost it charm with basic 3d graphics. For some reason it made me less tolerable.
